8,301 young Americans have found their final resting place in the American cemetery in Margraten. The Margraten Memorial Center is being developed, as this American cemetery in Margraten attracts hundreds of thousands of men, women and children from the Netherlands and its surrounding countries each year.
The story of our liberators needs to be handed down to future generations and so
our ambition is to realize a museum design that will ensure visitors experience a substantive depth of meaning when visiting the cemetery. The Center will provide space in which to commemorate liberty and tolerance, to propagate democratic principles and human dignity in a pluriform society. Yet the number one priority is for the Center to have an educational value. While the building must to capture the imagination and it must be high-profile, the architecture must not overshadow the building’s function, content and environment.
